How To Make Your Personal Magazine
Last year I made my own personal magazine, I wanted tangible media that could help me recap my whole year and doing a magazine was a really fun and creative way of going about it.
In today’s newsletter I outline the steps I took and give you the resources to make your own :)
So the first step is …
Come up with an Idea.
Decide which type of magazine you want to make , is it editorial style ? artsy , 2000s coded or a mix of everything . For my magazine I did a mix of editorial and artsy but maybe you can go for other styles or invent yours , it’s really up to your creativity.
Make A Pinterest Board.
If you’re just starting out and you feel both excited and overwhelmed with the thought of doing this project, I’d suggest you search up magazines and zines on Pinterest and make a board, you’d be surprised by the ideas you’ll come up with for your magazine .
Make an album
What I mean here is you go to your gallery or photos and make an album of the photos you’d like to use in your magazine , this can be photos of you and your friends , photos of food and places you’ve gone to , art that you have saved on your phone , collect them all and put them in one album , if you’re a perfectionist like me you can categorize the albums instead of having them all in one place , doing this will help when it comes to doing the layout for your magazine.
Choose an app .
For mine I used Canva , it’s user friendly and has a lot of elements and fonts you can play around with , I feel like the hardest part of making a magazine is coming up with fonts , so I’ll link a list of Canva fonts that I used for my magazine to ease that load for you , if you’re already knowledgeable on other apps like adobe you can also use that , but Canva is a great option for a beginner.

Come up with prompts /page ideas
if you want to make it interesting it’s always a great idea to have interactive magazine pages , I have a ready made Canva template for anyone who wants to get their magazine done and dusted without the stress that comes with it .
Getting it printed
Canva has the option to print the magazine for you , so I’d suggest you go that route but if that option isn’t appealing to you , visiting your local printing shop will also work and will also ensure you get what you ask for in terms of quality.
Tip -
Before sending out the pdf of your magazine make sure everything is ok , once they do the printing process and you’re not happy with the work you might have to pay to get it done again , so cross check before you get it sent , communicate with the one doing your printing and let them know how you want to go about it and then within no time you’ll have your magazine.
